Giorgio Amazing

A reader sent me a link to a recently closed eBay auction.

Sadly they missed out on it - but it was clearly hotly fought over!

Giorgio Armani dark brown tie
The opening price was a mere US$15.99, but it finally sold for US$515 (GB£360), when the winner bidder sniped it with seconds to spare.

The tie is from an eBay seller who's got dozens of random ties for sale, and there is no mention on the listing of its Doctor Who connection, so I can only guess that the three competing bidders were all eagle-eyed fans who locked in mortal combat to get it!

It’s a bit of a heads-up that when you spot something like this online, keep it to yourself if you are serious to buy it, otherwise you might find the price hiked on you by predatory collectors!

St George by Rip-off

Of all the original screen-worn ties that come up on eBay, the St George By Duffer tie from Utopia is one of the most common.

They often exchange hands for £75 to £100, so it’s raises some eyebrows to see a tie listed with a BuyItNow of £175.

Do read the update at the end of this posting.

I also noted it uses the very same photos (aside from the main picture) from a listing that closed in March this year, which I reported at the time. That was a listing that started at £3.99 before being pulled and relisted at £99. Hummmmm.

There are no nicks, pulls or stains on the tie.

Sold as seen. No returns.

UPDATE
The tie has been repeatedly resisted over the past few days, for £175, £165, £15 (yeah, not sure what happened there), £135 (with the new photos below - I guess he’s a reader of my blog) and is now at £105.

Rocha John Rocha -
grab a bargain while you can!

Today I’ve got a little gem for you - if you’re a completist when it comes to the Tennant ties!

A reader has highlighted an eBay listing from a seller who trades in surplus stock.

They are selling a range of Rocha John Rocha ties, among them is the tie bought by costume designer Louise Page, but which ultimately went unused.
The unused tie then sold as part of a job lot at the Bonhams 2010 Doctor Who auction.

The tie was initially selling for £9.99 - an absolute bargain!

They had a few for sale, and after being told of the Doctor Who connection, restocked with over a dozen of the ties - at the higher price of £17.99!

You can buy the tie through the original listing (above) or a new dedicated listing (below).

GAP trousers on eBay - trading up

One of my readers brought this to my attention, and we ended up doing a mutually beneficial deal.

He spotted a pair of GAP trousers on eBay and was already speaking directly to the seller to secure them.
However, they are waist 36 which is a size or two too big for my friend.
Ends up he needs a waist 32 - which I have half a dozen pairs of.
I’d be happier with a pair of waist 36 as these will give me just a bit more fabric once dissected to use to make an Ultimate Tennant Suit.

So we agreed a straight trade - his 36s for a pair of my 32s. He’s actually ended up a bit better off as mine are mint and still with labels, where as these are pre-worn.

Eitherway, we both won!

The Value of St George

It’s funny how a £3.99 listing can transform itself into a £99 listing overnight - when someone tells the seller the tie is desirable.

I’m sorry, but as a cosplay community, isn’t it about time we all agreed to just keep quiet?

Giorgio Armani - secured!

I’ve just secured myself a screen accurate Giorgio Armani tie!
But to get it I used some tactics that aren’t my usual style.

Genuine Giorgio Armani Tie
This gorgeous White Label Giorgio Armani tie is 100% silk and made in Italy. The background is a subtle two-tone weave of chocolate brown and sky blue, featuring chocolate brown ovals with sky blue squares offset inside them. The two-tone weave allows the background to catch the light differently based on which way it is turned, making it appear either dusty blue or dark brown. It is lined with a chartreuse woven lining with the words GIORGIO ARMANI patterned throughout.

After Doctor Who costume designer Louise Page purchased several of these ties, it became one of the most popular and iconic of David Tennant's ties during his run as the Tenth Doctor. It was first seen in the episode Love and Monsters and was later featured in Army of Ghosts, Doomsday, Smith and Jones, The Shakespeare Code, Gridlock, Fires of Pompeii, The Family of Blood, Turn Left, The Stolen Earth, Journey’s End, and Planet of the Dead.

This tie is in MINT CONDITION! It has no flaws, snags, rips, burns, stains, or fraying. It is 57" long and is 3⅝" wide at the widest point. It has had extremely good care taken of it in non-smoking home.

This tie is EXTREMELY RARE and highly sought after by cosplayers and collectors. It may be a very long time before another one appears. If you were looking for a special detail to bring that unique authenticity to your Tenth Doctor cosplay, this is it!

SECURING THE TIE
The tie has been listed by a friend of mine who amazingly has tracked down two such ties in as many months.

He then planned to sell the spare to get some pocket money for Gallifrey One next month.

I know the seller is a collector of the Tennant ties, so I offered him a unique swap for one of my screen accurate replica Eleventh Hour Christian Lacroix ties.

He wasn’t too sure, but when I told him the full story behind how I made the tie he was convinced and we had a deal!

He closed the eBay listing and when I get to Gallifrey One we’ll do the exchange.
Suffice to say he’s very excited to get his hands on one of my ties - and I’ve added another tie to my collection.

Christmas comes early

As you may have read, I’m slowly getting my GAP trousers together to make myself an Ultimate Tennant Suit.

Progress will always be slow as these were from the summer 2005 range, so haven’t been made for years.

That said, they do turn up from time to time on eBay, or through the forums where fans trade their costumes.

The last pair I found were on eBay in September, and I had to pay £150 to secure them.

So imagine my excitement this morning to find a pair on eBay with a £15 starting price - and on a BuyItNow!
I click that CommitToBuy button quicker than I could blink.

This puts me over halfway. I already have two pairs of waist 36 and one of waist 34, so these 32s will be forming the sleeves of my suit - when I can get on to making it!

It was only after that I checked their size - waist 32 - and noticed they were still tagged, so had never been worn!

I then started to write-up this entry you’re reading and was pulling in the description text from the listing, when I actually bothered to read it properly!

HERE WE HAVE BRAND NEW WITH TAGS GAP TROUSERS SIZE 32 X 32 INCHES I HAVE 1 PAIR SIZE 34 X 32 PLEASE REQUEST THIS SEPARATELY GAP SELLING PRICE £39.50. GRAB YOURSELF A BARGAIN WHICH SHIP IMMEDIATELY POSTAGE OR COLLECTION NOT A PROBLEM LIVERPOOL MANY THANKS

So this means there are actually TWO pairs on offer through this auction!
This will make FIVE pairs of GAP trousers - just one short of a suit!

I contacted the seller straight away to check he still had them and to make an offer for them. I gave him my number and within a few minutes I had a rather gob-smacking text.

Sorry? Hold on a minute. What was that????

We have gone from ONE pair (which would be great) to TWO pairs (which is even better) to a staggering EIGHT pairs??!!! E-I-G-H-T????

It wasn’t that I didn’t believe him - but I did want to see and confirm what we were talking about, so I asked him to text me a photo of all eight pairs.
And there they are - all EIGHT pairs - all mind and still tagged, unworn.
We agreed the price; I paid my money; and will be getting them very soon.

I do not want to be looking a gift horse in the mouth, but it’s a shame they are all waist 32. At least I have a couple of 36s to cover the larger panels of the suit when it comes to it.

This will put my tally to ELEVEN pairs - more than enough for my suit which I can’t wait to get on to making in the new year.

You can’t imagine how excited I am to finally complete this first stage of making the suit.

It’s like Christmas has come early!!!
UPDATE
Just to clarify, none of these trousers are for sale. I am using them to make myself a suit, and potentially for one lucky client in the future.
The begging letter have started and will be ignored. Sorry.

LAST Of The Time Lords Tie?

You know, since we started to become label-aware of the ties worn by the Tenth Doctor, I’ve been keeping a good eye open on eBay to see what comes up.

In my time I have only seen one of the Thomas Nash (Tie Five) for sale; I’ve spied a few Georgio Armanis (Tie Seven) including a few in differing colour ways; and only ever a solitary Christian Lacroix (Tie Four) but that too was in an alternative colour combination.

I’m sure others have been available, but the one that KEEPS cropping up the the St George By Duffer (Tie Ten), and just to prove that another was on sale this past week.

With the increasing better and better copies available, I did just check with the seller and can confirm it is a genuine St George tie.

* WARNING* FAKE items on eBay

I’ve been in two minds about posting this, but I decided to do so as a warning to other to sometimes be wary of what you see for sale on eBay.

The two items I’m highlighting appeared this week, and raised some eyebrows on a number of forums and social media sites.
They are so obviously wrong to not take in the savvy costume fan, are named such and come with apparent verifying documentation to possibly take in the less observant buyer.

Anyway, I leave you to judge their authenticity for yourself, but for what it’s worth I have my own opinions.

Super-rare GAP trousers on eBay

Since 2009 when I exclusively revealed the brand of the fabric used to make the iconic Tennant Suit was from GAP trousers, a few pairs have cropped up on eBay.
So far only one person, Kevin Coppa, has gathered enough pairs to recreate the suit in the form of the Ultimate Tennant Suit.

He was lucky enough to find six pairs from which we fashioned the jacket, based as closely as possible on the original suit.

Since then I haven’t seen many pairs for sale, but tonight a pair of size 36 waist closed, selling for a hefty £150 price tag.

I wonder who got them?

GAP never made a jacket to match these trousers, the one you see the Doctor wearing was made by the BBC costume department from four or five pairs of trousers. I don't think I'll ever find another four pairs so I'm selling these on in the hope that they might help someone else out.

The tie that never was on eBay

Now I’d be the first to admit this is a bit of a non-story since this tie was never screen-worn.

But two of the Rocha John Rocha ties as sold at the infamous Bonhams auction in 2010 (see right), were recently sold on eBay.
Although she never used it, the tie fell within the rules that costume designer Louise Page set herself - dark brown accented with light blue to reflect the brown suit with blue pinstripes.

You can see here how it could have worked with the suit and overcoat.

Not being one of the sought after ties, they sold for £10.99 each, which is a snip!

The Flurry of St George

So this will be my little rant, effectively about supply and demand.

I’m finding the latest developments about the St George by Duffer tie worn by David Tennant in the upcoming 50th Anniversary Special to be more than a tad interesting.

Between 2006 and 2009 when David was flying high in the role, the rise of the cosplayer dressed in a brown suit and long trench coat became a convention sight more common than not.
But for some reason the ties worn were not in their crosshairs until after he had departed the role.

The turning point was the 2010 Bonhams Doctor Who Auction where a small but nonetheless significant lot of Tenth Doctor ties were sold. They were significant not for being made available, but for the sheer fact the accompanying text listed the labels, blowing the lid on the manufacturers we should be looking out for - Daniel Hechter, Rocha John Rocha, St George by Duffer and Thomas Nash.

Pandora’s box was opened and the fan-machine that was in place following Matt Smith’s costume (the Paul Smith shirt; TopMan trousers; All Saints bootsG-Star RAW trousers etc etc) soon was on the case.

Even today, original St George ties as seen in Utopia crop up on eBay. Previously gaining over £200 a piece, they have more recently gone for a less eye-watering £50 as this listing demonstrates.

SOLD FOR £50
Brown background colour with diagonal floral pattern. This tie was a gift from a friend a fellow doctor who collector to my husband. tie is in excellent condition but has no label on the back.
Seen in the episodes Utopia , The last of the time lords and The sound of drums.
This is not the anniversary tie , one sold for over £225 on ebay.

Fast forward to this year, and within a day of filming with David Tennant on set for the Special, the new tie was spotted; identified; ordered and if lucky, bought in-store at Debenhams branches across the UK.

Before the end of the week, photos were on forums, Twitter and Facebook showing off proudly found ties.

Variants were spotted; widths were analysed; alignments of patterns were scrutinised, all endlessly debated on the forums.

But as fast as they were appearing on forums a similar number were popping up for sale on eBay, and for prices more associated with the rarer originals from 2006 to 2009.

To show just how numerous they were, here is just a selection of seller’s images from their listings.

Where previously the ties were identified after the fact - we now have a tie which is still available in-store. As a result most cosplayers who want one can get one either by walking into a branch of Debenhams or buy one from eBay.

Admittedly these are often at double their street-price, but that is still below the average price of the rewoven replicas found on the net.
Quite why you’d buy a replica of this tie when originals are so prolific I don’t know.

Anyway, to stand out in a crowded marketplace, I’ve noticed a number of eBay sellers coming up with novel ways to display their ties. Some on mannequins with Tennant suits; one even playing on the British heritage of the show by using a Union Jack as a background.

But if there was a prize, I would give it to the listing that used the photo below. Very creative!
