My journey didn’t start there, though. Along the journey that would take years to complete, several versions of this beautiful tie would come my way...<br />
<br />
First came the reproductions, then the originals trickled in, until I struck gold. Originals are always fun, so I'll start there and work my way back:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><blockquote class="tr_bq"><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span style="font-size: x-large;">Giorgio Armani original ties</span></i></div></blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2_dQJlYztCl1QV_vcbgp-AWq-9GJkPprwYJ-LFbbW9lOyzX0KHH2-uw2XFxmjmIENJQOIDHriPQhoWKe_IkMl-E18vMdIanAICdUq2s2HLxgRVpzOwej-uGkC0YYL-Mr8RhOSz2lGezk/s1600/ARMANI+-+black+tie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2_dQJlYztCl1QV_vcbgp-AWq-9GJkPprwYJ-LFbbW9lOyzX0KHH2-uw2XFxmjmIENJQOIDHriPQhoWKe_IkMl-E18vMdIanAICdUq2s2HLxgRVpzOwej-uGkC0YYL-Mr8RhOSz2lGezk/s320/ARMANI+-+black+tie.jpg" width="180" /></a></div>First in the group of originals is the black colourway variant of the Armani tie. To admit, when I first laid eyes on the auction and purchased it late last year, I thought I had found the brown version. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyNiRGyHREZD1URAWpkUGEdlh24Ci-dmdTzNuJm6hWm55SnUC_KZL5mgTQl1v9dTKg4yTsSI57UtIX9uGuNLXMUF2HWIYaeBPqNbDUUR_SEqfGVEHvxhPrE0sBFYVWNlgUNIXNT5FbRaE/s1600/ARMANI+-+black+label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyNiRGyHREZD1URAWpkUGEdlh24Ci-dmdTzNuJm6hWm55SnUC_KZL5mgTQl1v9dTKg4yTsSI57UtIX9uGuNLXMUF2HWIYaeBPqNbDUUR_SEqfGVEHvxhPrE0sBFYVWNlgUNIXNT5FbRaE/s320/ARMANI+-+black+label.jpg" width="180" /></a><br />
<br />
When the package arrived, I was disappointed to see it was the black variant.<br />
The mistake is due to the colour the tie can take on when photographed. The seller had only taken a few close pictures. In some shots it takes on an almost brown quality! Still beautiful, and would look sharp with many dress styles. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1eeCbEcuoNbclHAlfmXSt79Vcf86b4yjyK0KdpabQgNMWj-eWXfb8-YF6sOw8bIbBukKMRBxPylzWa1OtAWQI1UEVh9-YIoSWuVVYMSMOEaOKltLaUZeQ0CtvIN3QZ0WeidPUTdMk_08/s1600/ARMANI+-+blue+tie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj1eeCbEcuoNbclHAlfmXSt79Vcf86b4yjyK0KdpabQgNMWj-eWXfb8-YF6sOw8bIbBukKMRBxPylzWa1OtAWQI1UEVh9-YIoSWuVVYMSMOEaOKltLaUZeQ0CtvIN3QZ0WeidPUTdMk_08/s320/ARMANI+-+blue+tie.jpg" width="180" /></a><br />
My next original would come in the form of the blue variant, which also hit eBay late last year. After some debate on whether to bid or not, I figured what the heck. I won, and I opened it on Christmas.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7quPFNFZ8oT7EyCt8OVYR5EMQcVCW9pCuxoBePMHLZBgaL3d9jDXp9ALRbuynzDPJdavKYr8mILahBflThwNWq8PJDuVkL1sbV7ZPYEdAK_qTiNvewpHFg6K91daL_6UzO_ElXx-ulZI/s1600/ARMANI+-+blue+label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7quPFNFZ8oT7EyCt8OVYR5EMQcVCW9pCuxoBePMHLZBgaL3d9jDXp9ALRbuynzDPJdavKYr8mILahBflThwNWq8PJDuVkL1sbV7ZPYEdAK_qTiNvewpHFg6K91daL_6UzO_ElXx-ulZI/s200/ARMANI+-+blue+label.jpg" width="180" /></a><br />
<br />
Let me just say, this tie is BLUE! It’s almost obnoxious. That's part of the fun of it, though. I haven’t seen what could be worn with it yet, although I suspect it might look okay with Tennant's blue suit. Still have to see...<br />
<br />

My third original, which I have searched day and night for, over the last two years - my personal Holy Grail of Doctor Who: The brown Armani tie! After watching a new episode of <i>The Walking Dead</i>, it was time to do my usual eBay searches. This time, I would hit gold.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirTjDPTq117Bk2vdFMe54-CoO-Ymqtd292DiKylmcuY9y2Ls_MeNt0wSUg3ZcUHayeK8UsHmMEszx9z64Be_mmw7L80JLcnv1Lr9MadQAgMwAJdQyauuacsNm-xLxNPvEjIG0FnjZDeuU/s1600/ARMANI+-+brown+label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirTjDPTq117Bk2vdFMe54-CoO-Ymqtd292DiKylmcuY9y2Ls_MeNt0wSUg3ZcUHayeK8UsHmMEszx9z64Be_mmw7L80JLcnv1Lr9MadQAgMwAJdQyauuacsNm-xLxNPvEjIG0FnjZDeuU/s200/ARMANI+-+brown+label.jpg" width="180" /></a><br />
<br />
After a week of nail biting, and going back-and-forth with the seller to find out what she planned to do with the tie (yes, many were offering sums of money), the Sunday night finally came. With seconds to spare, I placed my bid and felt my heart jump for joy when I saw the note saying I was the winner.. My wallet hated me. Apparently I wasn't the only one willing to give my all. <br />
<br />
<i><span style="font-size: large;">Editor’s note</span></i><br />

A reader had alerted me to it after he had missed out (one of those willing to give their all). I was later contacted by John Tennant Smith who said he was the buyer of the tie! The result of our discussions is the article you are reading.</i><br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GIORGIO-ARMANI-DARKBROWN-CADETBLUE-CIRCLES-SQUARE-SILK-NECKTIE-TIE-MMA0616A-R30-/361505597015?nma=true&si=abPrCKlnILNvoBFbgpM3F9L77CM%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557"><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Giorgio Armani</b> dark brown tie</span></a></blockquote>Even after the auction ended, I was still nervous until I finally got the notification of my tie shipping. From the time the auction had ended, until it was shipped, the seller was still getting offers on the tie had I chosen to back out. Not a chance, though! When it arrived, it was the feeling of Christmas all over again. This egg tie is so beautiful, that I couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the day. While the repros are nice, they certainly aren't able to catch the spirit of the real deal. Seeing that Steve had posted about the auction, and being a buyer of his for one of his beautiful coats, I had to throw everything together for a quick picture and message him about who the winner was. Excuse the Kilgrave scruff ;)<br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-large;"><i>Magnoli Clothiers replicas</i></span></blockquote>Onto the reproductions: over the years, Indy from Magnoli Clothiers has produced this tie in three different versions (with a fourth red version on the way).<br />
<br />

<br />
I was new at cosplay and collecting, saw this on eBay for about half the price of his new version, and figured it was good enough. As I wore it with both my Baron brown suit and Magnoli brown suit, I became unhappy with how bright the tie was compared to the original..<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihzREzzt_Ycv8TbZXt4xvzzPCNUi539LDKJOdxbOhIJfgB2LJav3LL4r02yPnEDieDWPZzylLYUBb03rsT1C3qs2ModHiuJBbDHzcqYb7KnBJFBD1QICPn52wGUHY9ppVchHHAoapj9A8/s1600/MAGNOLI+-+dusky+blue+tie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihzREzzt_Ycv8TbZXt4xvzzPCNUi539LDKJOdxbOhIJfgB2LJav3LL4r02yPnEDieDWPZzylLYUBb03rsT1C3qs2ModHiuJBbDHzcqYb7KnBJFBD1QICPn52wGUHY9ppVchHHAoapj9A8/s320/MAGNOLI+-+dusky+blue+tie.jpg" width="180" /></a>Cue the second Magnoli tie produced: his alternative colourway. At the mistake of his factory, the colours messed up, taking on the look of the Armani when shot at an angle, appearing dusty blue.<br />
<br />

<br />
I figured it’d look cool to wear, so I picked it up. It’s a nice tie for the <i>Doomsday</i> look. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfTI7kZlOS4tQlaZIXI_ph8s4IIqHQENq2LiFRxju9AoLsSVRVYViblgGhN8qVcfhaHoWywBYkhArNhFHC3aIimoq9ud5-L2NQin6zlTrJi6quoda3FXDJ2Y6GtRW-o78_Elnx-CpfIII/s1600/MAGNOLI+-+brown+V2+tie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfTI7kZlOS4tQlaZIXI_ph8s4IIqHQENq2LiFRxju9AoLsSVRVYViblgGhN8qVcfhaHoWywBYkhArNhFHC3aIimoq9ud5-L2NQin6zlTrJi6quoda3FXDJ2Y6GtRW-o78_Elnx-CpfIII/s320/MAGNOLI+-+brown+V2+tie.jpg" width="180" /></a><br />
Things come in threes: Magnoli Clothier’s third, current iteration of the Armani tie. I love the Armani, and having become unhappy wearing my two reproductions that I own... I bit the bullet, and bought his new version some months after he released it.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoE2-3PljdYi9jZY2XRS2M2vRKQ0dVh-uIatr4X24vaHy05-jBZseNHrv12I1alv2ey_95Hs-mnE1ZSylC3pJRPi_R2JmjMJuc0gpSZGjzl1MgBlPrFxhSJCw_SqBbDwhRC3j598e4W54/s1600/MAGNOLI+-+brown+V2+label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoE2-3PljdYi9jZY2XRS2M2vRKQ0dVh-uIatr4X24vaHy05-jBZseNHrv12I1alv2ey_95Hs-mnE1ZSylC3pJRPi_R2JmjMJuc0gpSZGjzl1MgBlPrFxhSJCw_SqBbDwhRC3j598e4W54/s200/MAGNOLI+-+brown+V2+label.jpg" width="180" /></a><br />
<br />
Upon opening it, I loved it! It really is a great alternative to the original. <br />
<br />
While buying the repro ties, I never gave up looking for an original, knowing that was my end goal. It took a great while, but I did it. Thoughts of what to do with the others have crossed my mind. Maybe one day the collection will split, but for now I like the family of Armani's, as it tells my story.<br />
<br />
How do the reproductions stack to the original? In my opinion, each iteration has its qualities to the original, that the other ones lack.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9uLLQGeHPZvsXmhtzKbfcbXJJdannjBRmP0O6eqck0RVrLP-lnxJYwxKfzzu3YUJ40KpOc9Zuf3y-FNQh48roJnQ947DqZPpuUujQ2529hI-6H1eiXuGNd-xqSfPfl-J4k3zCs6cIGSc/s1600/MAGNOLI+vs+ARMANI.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="210" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9uLLQGeHPZvsXmhtzKbfcbXJJdannjBRmP0O6eqck0RVrLP-lnxJYwxKfzzu3YUJ40KpOc9Zuf3y-FNQh48roJnQ947DqZPpuUujQ2529hI-6H1eiXuGNd-xqSfPfl-J4k3zCs6cIGSc/s400/MAGNOLI+vs+ARMANI.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
The first tie Magnoli produced had captured the embroidery of the blue boxes almost perfectly, that his future iterations went away from. Magnoli's second tie (blue colourway) used a more accurate silk base that his 1st and 3rd lack. Magnoli's current iteration lined up the egg pattern perfectly. If all three of those qualities mixed, and a base colour tweak, I bet the results would be stunning.<br />

The Armani is over 10 years old! Many may have been produced, but with how many have likely ended up in attics to rot, dumps, shipped to far away lands, or are just sitting in some hole in the wall thrift shoppe... very few have ever surfaced on eBay; who knows when the next one will pop up. However, if you want something, and can stay determined and wait it out, then there is always the chance to accomplish your personal goal. <br />

Late last year one of my readers spotted an unusual jacket on eBay.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qsehAI-EX8KWAO960nBMKF-RAtB6XpYxWYS_Ht9RXPHshczN2RY928dqsvaL78YVYd7vEyyE8s4VD0Hdo9oMORmJdu86XcaDuzLnE9wjTgzr0fGVhMizX1DHq7_R1IyiaIrrCvQNk_c/s1600/Steel+%2526+Jelly+INSET+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qsehAI-EX8KWAO960nBMKF-RAtB6XpYxWYS_Ht9RXPHshczN2RY928dqsvaL78YVYd7vEyyE8s4VD0Hdo9oMORmJdu86XcaDuzLnE9wjTgzr0fGVhMizX1DHq7_R1IyiaIrrCvQNk_c/s200/Steel+%2526+Jelly+INSET+4.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
It was a fairly common-place cut suit-style jacket, but made from a fabric which bore more than a striking resemblance to the GAP trousers fabric used to make Tenannt’s suits!<br />
<br />
Well this week the same reader has stumbled upon a similarly curious jacket - this time made by none other than Paul Smith!<br />
<br />
Paul Smith has now provided wardrobe for three Doctors: Ten’s dinner jacket; Eleven’s burgundy and blue scroll shirts; and Twelve’s jumper full of holes!<br />
<br />
I’m informed the jacket has been listed and re-listed several times without finding a buyer, so if you are interested in grabbing it - now’s your chance!<br />
<br />

<br />
The tie is from an eBay seller who's got dozens of random ties for sale, and there is no mention on the listing of its <i>Doctor Who </i>connection, so I can only guess that the three competing bidders were all eagle-eyed fans who locked in mortal combat to get it!<br />

It’s a bit of a heads-up that when you spot something like this online, keep it to yourself if you are serious to buy it, otherwise you might find the price hiked on you by predatory collectors!Steven Ricks Tailoringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07549983020683092455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5070344278942504639.post-61126215795465730792016-02-05T15:59:00.000+00:002016-02-05T15:59:04.040+00:00SB6 Space Suit - The SpaceToys Satan PitFollowing on from my reader’s enquiry about the SpaceToy space suits, I thought it a good time to reproduce an article which first appeared on the DW_Cosplay forum way back in March 2011.<br />
At the time Tennant-era costume designer Louise Page had just been a gust at that years Gallifrey One convention, and all things Tenth Doctor were all the rage!<br />

After hosting a panel with the always awesome Bob Mitsch where the mantra of sharing what you know to benefit the community was a prevalent encouragement, I thought I’d share the successes and hopefully prepare you all for some of the pitfalls in what it took to put together my SB6 space suit for Gallifrey One 2010. As well as some really neat details I was told about the real suits by costume designer Louise Page at the convention just last week!<br />
<br />

<br />
For those who don’t know me, I’ve already dressed as Ten at several Who cons using an old Magnoli suit. It looks fine and I’ve nothing against the brown suit but after wearing it so many times I was desperate for a little variety. I’m nowhere near getting a quality blue suit yet, his <i>Christmas Invasion </i>pajamas look fun and certainly would be comfortable, but clearly nothing stands out quite as cool as the space suit from the <i>Satan Pit </i>episodes. Plus with it’s reappearance in <i>The Waters of Mars </i>cementing it as a repeat costume, I know it’s popularity has shot up. Decision made!<br />
<br />
Frankly I thought this one was going to be easy. Most of the parts looked like they could be sourced & purchased without much modification, primary of which is the orange pumpkin suit itself which I believe this community already knows comes from US costume maker Spacetoys.com. They even advertise on their website that they supplied several suits to be used in the show. I first found that out on my own after a brief Google search for “orange space suit” and I thought I was a pretty special snowflake for a while there too until I discovered a group on the Replica Prop Forum had already ID’ed long before me. LOL<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFVVkS7k3kZTMJHUdjTA-C_Txs7ZssgFrN6ZR38II1shQf9DNJjYMRoS5YYHSBLIqOAcu4mkMv212bBVvZ5srl9uO3qRGE_jdlnHd1Qr8uoMASvbSUJIjJ3J0VTEDcHENrpNq13sZ4p3I/s1600/spacetoyssuit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFVVkS7k3kZTMJHUdjTA-C_Txs7ZssgFrN6ZR38II1shQf9DNJjYMRoS5YYHSBLIqOAcu4mkMv212bBVvZ5srl9uO3qRGE_jdlnHd1Qr8uoMASvbSUJIjJ3J0VTEDcHENrpNq13sZ4p3I/s400/spacetoyssuit.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Either way it was still exciting to find (what I thought) was a totally screen-accurate source for what makes up 90% of the costume. So I even though it had a mighty hefty price tag at $545 with an additional shipping charge of $99 (yes, you read that inflated shipping cost right) I figured I’m an adult with an adult job and can afford something like this one more time- after all, if I can recover from buying a PS3 I can handle this right?<br />
<br />
Now, if you’re thinking of being totally crazy like me and buying one at the sticker price you should know the website says they make them in two sizes seen here:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO4QM85xVHJMULBeg5y5m5Nc0J19ZoxsI2WYaEIPhuum9uqsdiaFMlYJTbm5TZCXXlCoCDMMqqws-IpHEWu3-nWk3-MhMkdDp1l9VrQFnGKJyOBchgUQxHJBlBQatx3Lt6ao_hzvUHKeQ/s1600/sizes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="55" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO4QM85xVHJMULBeg5y5m5Nc0J19ZoxsI2WYaEIPhuum9uqsdiaFMlYJTbm5TZCXXlCoCDMMqqws-IpHEWu3-nWk3-MhMkdDp1l9VrQFnGKJyOBchgUQxHJBlBQatx3Lt6ao_hzvUHKeQ/s400/sizes.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Large – Height: 5'5" - 5'10" and X-Large: 5'10" - 6'3" with custom sizing at request (possibly at an extra charge-I don’t know for sure though- I never asked).<br />
<br />
I’m 5’11” so I figured I’d risk ordering the smaller of the two, “larges” since my height seemed to be right on the borderline. Also, though I thought to, I didn’t end up bothering to ask if they could leave the NASA patches shown in the photos off the final suit since I knew I could just seam-rip them off regardless. So I just bought it. Right through the website. No phone communication beforehand. Just button clicking and credit card numbers being flown through cyberspace. I may be an adult but I can admit I’m still apt to make mistakes from time to time. Folks let me tell ya, NEVER DO THIS with an item THIS expensive without investigating it over the phone with a REAL PERSON the way I just did. Allow me to tell you why…<br />
<br />
After two weeks I finally got it in the mail and with fevered excitement tried it on for the first time… Yikes. If what I was wearing was considered the smaller of two “Larges” I can’t fathom what form of mighty giant the “X-Large” would have draped over snugly- I don’t even think Shaq would look moderately fitted in one. Now it fit me all right in the shoulder and leg length but for whatever reason, SpaceToys seemed to have anticipated me possessing some ungodly huge gut. <br />
<br />
Of course I know it’s supposed to look baggy and baggy it did look. But to such an extreme that I had almost 8 whole inches of material sagging off the crotch end of this thing like left over stomach skin after liposuction. The crotch sag made this Doctor look more like “Gangsta Who” and I expected be hearing someone sing “Pants On The Ground” to me at any second.<br />
<br />
Imaginative comparisons for the sizing aside, there were several other major details which were totally off and some even missing completely!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For starters the pouches on the legs had NO ZIPPERS. This one really got me steamed especially since the picture on the darn website clearly shows the suit with zippers on the pockets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0S5MAU9Rk1lJtqdYQaeW28dBPY8BDvJQ0sgMQ2AGaUBo7XO42Mah7hrTQzTM-CdQuhAkpvspZmOeB_RAPkuHmhXgmzQKfMNiZ9dqJm6sr0GLophbBOcLuXQuZqay_cCMk3rHl_yjCFdc/s1600/flippinflipped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0S5MAU9Rk1lJtqdYQaeW28dBPY8BDvJQ0sgMQ2AGaUBo7XO42Mah7hrTQzTM-CdQuhAkpvspZmOeB_RAPkuHmhXgmzQKfMNiZ9dqJm6sr0GLophbBOcLuXQuZqay_cCMk3rHl_yjCFdc/s400/flippinflipped.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
On top of that (and I nearly missed this one because I was mostly looking at it on myself in the mirror) the three black Velcro strips across the right leg had jumped ship at the SpaceToys production house and landed incorrectly sewn onto the left. Again, a detail contradicting the photo they used to advertise their expensive product.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihJdAfGIANXye1pIxLFkyd2OIs15sAUaVj8euBdWXa_m12WNFCOoy8SJ3BkMBPVTLpvq56tadF1AF2HunY2YNSuMLh9COJ3jvYhK_SjtB7XkxZzut9vR28nTE0BCvtAyBKCyecuK3eLME/s1600/hotgluehell.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihJdAfGIANXye1pIxLFkyd2OIs15sAUaVj8euBdWXa_m12WNFCOoy8SJ3BkMBPVTLpvq56tadF1AF2HunY2YNSuMLh9COJ3jvYhK_SjtB7XkxZzut9vR28nTE0BCvtAyBKCyecuK3eLME/s200/hotgluehell.jpg" width="200" /></a>The final blow came from those patches I had decided to not bother asking to be excluded. It came with three- An American flag on the left arm, a NASA emblem on the left breast, and a Space Shuttle triangle logo on the right. The American flag was sewn on and came off very easily with a few tugs from a seam ripper. The other two though…<br />
<br />
…Were cheaply HOT GLUED DIRECTLY to the fabric!!! We're talkin' globs of it fused into the fibers. Even heating it off with a heat gun would leave tons of slick residue. I could hear my $644 laughing at me from Hell.<br />
<br />
I called up SpaceToys and calmly inquired into a possible exchange. I was just as calmly reminded that the website contains disclaimers informing me that all sales are final and materials available for finishing the suits are dependent on their current availability. In short, I was screwed and that money was not coming back. Lesson learned and I hope it can serve as a warning to anyone looking to deal with SpaceToys over this product to make sure they’ll be getting exactly what they want before dishing out the cash.<br />
<br />
Well since this story is already running way too long, I’ll cut things short a give a quick run down what I had to do get the suit up to spec since I was stuck with it either way.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOviHCCrFZW4BYpIqjMVdnllXPGSJUuHoiq2u8OntJXg1RNXgRm3k83FFds53sqMnEXpmbqv7vQNVviWA-uGyccdHwGMAdrWZmpezYAtsr5YL9MNK4Zix2aN-znmxdcfPYHUWK8QFjKHs/s1600/brokenlegs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOviHCCrFZW4BYpIqjMVdnllXPGSJUuHoiq2u8OntJXg1RNXgRm3k83FFds53sqMnEXpmbqv7vQNVviWA-uGyccdHwGMAdrWZmpezYAtsr5YL9MNK4Zix2aN-znmxdcfPYHUWK8QFjKHs/s320/brokenlegs.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
• To solve the baggy waist problem I had to take the whole bottom of the suit apart which included the two front sections of the legs- This worked out okay since I was going to have to remove the pockets to add zippers to them anyway and it’s plain easier to sew them back onto the disassembled leg sections.<br />
<br />
• I then cut about 6” of fabric off of the lower half of the body section where it seemed to be a better fit for me and then re-attached the front of the legs.<br />
<br />
• This brought the front leg pieces up higher than the back ones and they had to be trimmed to match. After which the entire legs ends were cuffed as they were before I pulled them apart.<br />
<br />
• While it’s mostly not noticeable and hidden by the harness straps around the legs, this change in crotch length also required an alteration to what I’ve dubbed “The Cod Piece.”<br />
<br />

It needed to be sewn back on higher than were it once was on the front and shortened on it’s back end so it didn’t sag too far down past the crotch.<br />
<br />
• I removed all the pouches then cut and added 14” long zippers to the tops of them. I also switched the Velcro panel to it’s correct side. <br />
<br />
Tips & Info on Sewing the Suit:<br />
As you can see in the pic above, the material is a thick “Canvas Ducting Cloth” in “Hunter Orange.” I’ve found bales of exact matches in my local JoAnn’s and I’m willing to bet that’s where SpaceToys gets their supply too. The thread is a very thick, very visible line (almost like tying string) that leaves big holes in the fabric after it’s been removed. So be careful where you put your stitches or it will show should you change your mind.<br />
<br />
I found that if one small bit of the thread was broken, it would all quickly come undone. I could literally pull the suit apart if I wanted to once that small section of the thread was snapped.<br />
<br />
–Keep that in mind for something that Louise told me later. As such, I chose to use a smaller thread with a tighter spacing on my machine when I sewed it back together to make it stronger since I didn’t want to be forced to sew this thing back together a second time should I bust a thread.<br />
<br />
• I used an iron to get the NASA patches off and used this recipe to dissolve & scrape the remnants of the hot glue residue off:<br />
- Heat up<br />
- Douse in Goo Gone<br />
- Rub the fabric like crazy<br />
- Use a metal tool to methodically scrape the gunk out of the fabric channels<br />
<br />
To my surprise it worked brilliantly! I then added some custom patches I designed in Photoshop from screen caps and had a friend with a proper machine embroider for me.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7JC6gD36PPg26pmjatkrBF3IdV-x5A-lDAhTe7wWeaDFtD5tbegkqr4bSz-TygWTTLrr97-xGNLe8kZCJtQf5XaSM4-Q4yAMG2Xa9DV8muP0fcqC1l0JxFoUCom9WJmExsJyABOH9tNA/s1600/patches.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="178" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7JC6gD36PPg26pmjatkrBF3IdV-x5A-lDAhTe7wWeaDFtD5tbegkqr4bSz-TygWTTLrr97-xGNLe8kZCJtQf5XaSM4-Q4yAMG2Xa9DV8muP0fcqC1l0JxFoUCom9WJmExsJyABOH9tNA/s400/patches.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Thankfully, that was about it in terms of correcting the suit's problems from their maker. There’s a lot more to cover about all the other things that were created & added to make it as accurate as possible (i.e. adding cuffed sleeves, a zipper cover, etc.) as well a whole list of the other items that make up the costume besides the suit. But I thought for now I’d just share what you may be in for if you decide to take the plunge and buy a SpaceToys suit.<br />
<br />
To finish up, I thought I’d share some tidbits of info I got from Louise Page when I talked to her about the Space Suit costumes used in the show-<br />
<br />
I wore the suit to her panel on Friday. She noticed it right away and our conversation went like this:<br />
<br />
<b>Louise</b>: <i>That looks great! Did you make it all yourself?</i><br />
<b>Me</b>:<i> I might as well have for all the trouble it cost me but no, I bought it from...</i><br />
<b>Louise</b> (cutting me off): <i>Spacetoys.com?</i><br />
<b>Me</b>: <i>Yep that's the one.</i><br />
<b>Louise</b>: <i>Oh what a NIGHTMARE!</i><br />
<br />
It turns out the suits she bought from them were just as cheap (in quality, not price) and came apart the first day they sized them just like I found to be the problem with the thread being easily pulled apart.<br />
<br />
Her experience with their customer service was just as deeply unsatisfying too. In the end she told me that to get a filmable suit they had to take apart the Spacetoys suits, use them as patterns and remake their own from the same type of fabric. Almost exactly what I had to do! <br />
<br />
She confirmed the use of the clunky snowboard boots seen in the London exhibits.<br />
<br />
The neck ring was remade by Millennium FX since the ST ones broke on the first day.<br />
<br />
The rubber billows that connect the yellow helmet to the suit’s neck ring was also custom sculpted & cast by them and was a pain to get it to work and hold together.<br />
<br />
The second suit that the actress wears in “Satan Pit” was made very quickly as the part was recast at the last minute and the new actress was much shorter than the first. In fact the new one was the same height as Louise so she used herself as the model to base the new suit off of which is why there’s a picture of her out there somewhere of her wearing it in the costume shop.<br />
<br />
That’s all I can remember for now. Hope that’s helpful to anyone looking to make this costume.Steven Ricks Tailoringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07549983020683092455noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5070344278942504639.post-62494066665196082222016-02-05T12:32:00.000+00:002016-02-05T12:32:15.047+00:00SB6 Space Helmet - acquiring the base<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

One of my readers contacted this week to ask questions and advise about the SB6 Space Suit, which came from US-based seller, Space Toys.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">

Personally I have never made myself such a suit, but I gave him the best advise I could - which is essentially not to buy it unless you are prepared for disappointment!<br />

This was backed up by my friend <a href="http://dw-cosplay.livejournal.com/433877.html" target="_blank">Kevin Coppa, who also bought one of the suits, only to be disappointed</a>.<br />

The suits aren’t made that well, something the <i>Doctor Who</i> costume department found out when their’s arrived from the States.<br />
<br />
In fact the first outing for the suits (in <i>The Impossible Planet</i>) were actually remade from scratch by Louise Page and her team at very short notice. This was party because they weren’t what they expected, but also due to one of the lead actors was recast only a few days before filming started, and the replacement actress was much shorter than the original choice!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6lv07IAO7FF2q3teym-dIk5OsxhZMDMPhdfk2Ypdfhb5dK7wNNlpstUlDvM6rcbDG4KX2kjdpjpT_mvun9_IEA9TfGX8_wYoOi443aOZqSioN-m8UsszUj8l5SrCfjqrNG_jShdLZ3u4K/s1600/helmet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6lv07IAO7FF2q3teym-dIk5OsxhZMDMPhdfk2Ypdfhb5dK7wNNlpstUlDvM6rcbDG4KX2kjdpjpT_mvun9_IEA9TfGX8_wYoOi443aOZqSioN-m8UsszUj8l5SrCfjqrNG_jShdLZ3u4K/s200/helmet.jpg" width="185" /></a></div>
Anyway, my reader was also seeking one of the Scott Tornado T/Procap Headtop welding masks. This was used by the prop department as a base on which the SB6 helmets were built, and amazingly they are still available today.<br />
<br />
He had found a company in the UK that sells them, but they do not ship to the US where he is based, so I agreed to act as a middleman and send it on using my FedEx account.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

While I had it, I thought I’d take a few photos to share with the rest of my readers, in case anyone else is inspired to have a go at recreating one of these helmets themselves.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKoPPz-VwPx81plY6fe__Tu-3tr26ZwAUNonjz7dEjQBAIqDeyvs8-A64YicokHxXmOf9KDQzd1xilJloBz3WrOQ_IOn-5YaI5rjnkLR1aaHSBGrzHku9BJwdoSb7hElA1YesKGEpedgI/s1600/helmet+shots.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="939" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKoPPz-VwPx81plY6fe__Tu-3tr26ZwAUNonjz7dEjQBAIqDeyvs8-A64YicokHxXmOf9KDQzd1xilJloBz3WrOQ_IOn-5YaI5rjnkLR1aaHSBGrzHku9BJwdoSb7hElA1YesKGEpedgI/s640/helmet+shots.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
The helmet is the white moulded plastic part, and the grey visor hinges up over the head, but this is very stiff.<br />
<br />
From what I can see, the visor and surrounding frame was little altered for use on <i>Doctor Who</i>, but the main helmet had to be enclosed round the neck before various moulded plastic attachments were added to make it look suitably spacey.<br />
<br />
Inside, there is a chin strap to help keep the helmet in place when in use, as well as a fabric curtain at the rear, presumably to keep hair out of harms way.<br />
<br />
At the back of the helmet, there is a connector where a hose can be attached. This then plugs into an extractor unit which pulls clean air over the face of the user.<br />
The prop department kept this part of the design intact, and the appropriate hose connector is also available from the retailer.<br />
<br />

Here is the hose in its packaging.<br />
<br />
I’ll be keen to find out how my reader gets on with creating his helmet, and hopefully when he’s done I’ll be able to share some pictures of his finished masterpiece!<br />

Philip, one of my readers, recently sent me a link to a curious item being sold on eBay.<br />
<br />
At first glance it is a rather unremarkable brown suit jacket, but once you start looking closer it becomes a bit more interesting.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiptW7eWY8Nv4zbesFfvk7KEHU_KvDRgXemqX0-G9NQe2PlXQ1HIeTmSv4v1dUH5Cxij-oTVQ6EW7xnXQJ3PC50VvXqGafe88eqglhKlAM-MrUTN83juZe4LI4vd0CF4nB_dKwnLwcHgcI/s1600/Steel+%2526+Jelly+INSET+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiptW7eWY8Nv4zbesFfvk7KEHU_KvDRgXemqX0-G9NQe2PlXQ1HIeTmSv4v1dUH5Cxij-oTVQ6EW7xnXQJ3PC50VvXqGafe88eqglhKlAM-MrUTN83juZe4LI4vd0CF4nB_dKwnLwcHgcI/s200/Steel+%2526+Jelly+INSET+5.jpg" width="160" /></a><br />
<br />
Ironically this is just the jacket, unlike the source of the original fabric for the suit, which was just the trousers!<br />

<br />
Although the angle of David’s head is different and his had is in his pocket, you can see a lot of the creases on his suit match perfectly.<br />
<br />
I imagine the image used on the comic cover was original rejected as David is look far too down his nose at us - which is not a good look!<br />

So far the photo variant covers have been a gold mine of previously unpublished images from the Tenth Doctor publicity shoots.<br />
<br />
This weekend sees <a href="http://www.freecomicbookday.com/" target="_blank">Free Comic Book Day</a>, and there is a special issue from Titan with all three of their Doctors sharing the cover.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The image of the Tenth Doctor is cleverly cut from an early series four photo, which unedited is shared with Catherine Tate as Donna Nobel.<br />
<br />
Ironically it was one of the rare times two actors were photographed alongside each other, rather than being shot separately and composted together later.<br />
<br />
The Titan cover unpicks this!<br />

The image used is quite a candid image of David in his brown suit with the Hechter tie.<br />
<br />
This matches the series four photocall with Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, during which a number of solo shots were taken as well.<br />
<br />
The shot is handy as a reference image, as it almost gives a side view of the suit, without David’s arm getting too much in the way.<br />

This week is issue five of Titan Comics’ <i>New Adventures With The Tenth Doctor</i>.<br />
I didn’t report on last month’s issue as it didn’t have any covers worth mentioning, but this issue does have an image worth flagging up.<br />
<br />
It has the usual graphic art cover, but for subscribers only there is a second photo variant.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The photo cover version has a nice picture of David in full costume, taken from the archive of publicity stills used for <i>The End Of Time</i> in 2009.<br />
The pose is the same, but the hang of the coat and suit is ever so slightly different - and here we see it head to toe for the first time.<br />
<br />
Other shots from this shoot appeared on the DVD packaging for the series four specials.<br />

I don’t usually mention stuff like this, but this contains something a bit special you’ll like to read - especially if you’re a regular reader of my blogs.<br />
<br />
The magazine reviews an incredible year for the programme, its spin-offs and the licensed merchandise available.<br />
Highlights include our first major interview with the show’s executive producer, Brian Minchin, in which he reflects on Peter Capaldi’s first year as the Doctor and looks forward to further adventures with the Twelfth Doctor.<br />
<br />

<br />
I was approached by Simon Guerrier, who as well as writing for <i>Doctor Who Magazine</i> has written adventures for <i>Big Finish</i>. We met in London a few weeks ago where we chatted about my work and some background information about how I do what I do.<br />
<br />
We talked about a number of my projects, including making the Ultimate Tennant Suit from the genuine GAP trousers.<br />
<br />
I provided a number of images for use with the article, including getting permission from Louise Page to share the picture of her with the <a href="http://tennantsuit.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/ultimate-tennant-suit-finished.html">Ultimate Tennant Suit</a>.<br />
<br />
I was hoping for maybe a half page, but in the end it turned out as a full page - which is awesome!<br />

<br />
They often exchange hands for £75 to £100, so it’s raises some eyebrows to see a tie listed with a BuyItNow of £175.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Do read the update at the end of this posting.</span></i><br />
<br />
I also noted it uses the very same photos (aside from the main picture) from a listing that closed in March this year, <a href="http://tennantsuit.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/the-value-of-st-george.html">which I reported at the time</a>. That was a listing that started at £3.99 before being pulled and relisted at £99. Hummmmm.<br />

Unlike the previous issues it’s not an unseen image from the archive, but a cut out previously used in a composite picture used to launch series three with Martha Jones.<br />
<br />
The colour has been played around with too, so it’s not great reference material this time. Pity.<br />

Last year I showed you a <a href="http://tennantsuit.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/st-george-by-matalan.html">tie being sold at Matalan</a>, which was the right colour combination and a similar design to the St George by Duffer as worn by David in <i>The Day Of The Doctor</i>.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZXsMPOzRzNztfvc2COCRoD4RgSlE7yjJevIE94M6W13zjIywjzK8gmqWcC7cBGCBTtYFP9DG5AdcXcOKzLvLUOnCuW87F-Fa0dk6yCQ-f0OCTpkBWuUmH3OtQy86T8d33IzA4_wi5pv8/s1600/skinny-silk-floral-tie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZXsMPOzRzNztfvc2COCRoD4RgSlE7yjJevIE94M6W13zjIywjzK8gmqWcC7cBGCBTtYFP9DG5AdcXcOKzLvLUOnCuW87F-Fa0dk6yCQ-f0OCTpkBWuUmH3OtQy86T8d33IzA4_wi5pv8/s1600/skinny-silk-floral-tie.jpg" height="200" width="141" /></a><br />

It was thread-for-thread the same, just in an uninspiring grey and silver.<br />
<br />
Well today, almost a year the the day later, one of my readers was out shopping and came across something quite surprising.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwwzj1G5yCrkHMlEAVcwGvpJ_k_LX-qOXhyIvMWru638Ws1ia2LJUyAvmDUaZclpL7T8ariAX3vI2s0mgD7B9uTfzhZsNfIQ8bNEMZsgn68ggihKCjeNEy1lYNKhsjItvA9D3yfQycpy4/s1600/NEXT+-+portsmouth.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwwzj1G5yCrkHMlEAVcwGvpJ_k_LX-qOXhyIvMWru638Ws1ia2LJUyAvmDUaZclpL7T8ariAX3vI2s0mgD7B9uTfzhZsNfIQ8bNEMZsgn68ggihKCjeNEy1lYNKhsjItvA9D3yfQycpy4/s1600/NEXT+-+portsmouth.jpeg" height="320" width="226" /></a>Next are currently stocking a tie which is a dead ringer for <i>The Day Of the Doctor</i> St George by Duffer, but in a striking pink colour scheme!<br />
<br />
This was spotted in the Portsmouth branch. It’s only £8 (compared to the £14 of the original St George tie) with the flowers in pink and lilac on a navy blue background.<br />
<br />
Looking at it closer, the flowers are really reminiscent of the St George tie.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBN7FeIlP8EvOA9JMjvfE2LSNtrlhgCKY4EDLsZX0J1jBVohQjiegDkIE4pyz5dAUfFtul1UdBPfpmOzpmakdsbBN0cHUZ-Jtl9mNl-ut45vJi8k-xM19EjLn0MsBDGNU9k9J-eySiFFM/s1600/NEXT+-+borehamwood.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBN7FeIlP8EvOA9JMjvfE2LSNtrlhgCKY4EDLsZX0J1jBVohQjiegDkIE4pyz5dAUfFtul1UdBPfpmOzpmakdsbBN0cHUZ-Jtl9mNl-ut45vJi8k-xM19EjLn0MsBDGNU9k9J-eySiFFM/s1600/NEXT+-+borehamwood.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
I wondered if they did another colour that was closer to, or fingers crossed, the same as screen-worn.<br />
<br />
So I went into my own local branch and found the tie - in a second colour choice, but still not the dark brown and sky blue. Damn.<br />
<br />
Once I got it how I put it alongside my St George tie and realised it IS the exact same loom-weave.<br />
<br />
As you can see from these photos, the flowers are IDENTICAL, it is purely the colour choice that differentiates them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpEb56NQbcscGXIkuH9-Vjf5DYe9Vp9Nhv7z4JysN9_LR449_8MbHiXHtBIu8Nkv0inTniqoPw4QCM1rkYSBBETEmm5BPECWi_2Qfxe9hp07n3HXAN7rwHetjD6fhi0-UTlAIMunxzDlk/s1600/NEXT+-+pattern+alighning+CROPPED.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpEb56NQbcscGXIkuH9-Vjf5DYe9Vp9Nhv7z4JysN9_LR449_8MbHiXHtBIu8Nkv0inTniqoPw4QCM1rkYSBBETEmm5BPECWi_2Qfxe9hp07n3HXAN7rwHetjD6fhi0-UTlAIMunxzDlk/s1600/NEXT+-+pattern+alighning+CROPPED.jpg" height="539" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
This, along with the Scott Allen version of the Thomas Nash tie, makes me think that manufactures in the Far East have designs on their books which they sell to retailers who then choose what colours they want them in.<br />
<br />
Having now seen two versions, I’m wondering if there are further colour ways. Can you help?<br />

As an aside, I also spotted a rather creepy tea-light holder in the form of a cherub which reminded me of those in <i>The Angels Take Manhattan</i>.<br />

<br />
Last month’s San Deigo ComicCon often has convention exclusives, and Titan Comics jumped on the band wagon with not one but two sets are variants.<br />
Both versions join with the <i>New Adventures With The Eleventh Doctor </i>to make a single panoramic image.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaV1sw9GDqzv94o2JyHayqRGC-GRV5LAGVovu9nLnrZRMrO_GKyrXpOzokXWGs2kDy1vHtJNjyDgBAzr841FtyUNpSGqFdnUA1RvNmAGQe8FF2LVOADGgyrDb8Myfn8dlqA5lvimetkks/s1600/10th%252B11th+Dr+SDCC+2014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaV1sw9GDqzv94o2JyHayqRGC-GRV5LAGVovu9nLnrZRMrO_GKyrXpOzokXWGs2kDy1vHtJNjyDgBAzr841FtyUNpSGqFdnUA1RvNmAGQe8FF2LVOADGgyrDb8Myfn8dlqA5lvimetkks/s400/10th%252B11th+Dr+SDCC+2014.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

<br />
David’s hair seems to match the composites with Alex Kingston as River Song as show here.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
This too is an image I don’t recall being published before - probably due to its pose being so candid in nature.<br />
<br />
Again, if you look at David’s hair it matches the photo shown here.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"><b>FOOTNOTE</b></span></div>Not to be out done, Forbidden Planet in the UK had their very own variant based on the BBC Shop version.<br />

Using the same background, it has yet another previously unpublished image from the series four photoshoot.<br />
Note again how David’s hair matches the sample shot above.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0H4THZ_E_8keD3JlSzk4pujiDKiiUVeb6r0z67OCprPuwyW5A6HehmWnZZ1v7l3jzpBtAiNdFBFo8Gf_JobaHP8E1Ft1cgWfF5vcGxge-FXl-ENF2NXRylyrSi2NVHRlRRDHDBP12EKk/s1600/Tennant-photoshoot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0H4THZ_E_8keD3JlSzk4pujiDKiiUVeb6r0z67OCprPuwyW5A6HehmWnZZ1v7l3jzpBtAiNdFBFo8Gf_JobaHP8E1Ft1cgWfF5vcGxge-FXl-ENF2NXRylyrSi2NVHRlRRDHDBP12EKk/s400/Tennant-photoshoot.jpg" width="118" /></a>As cosplayers we are always on the look out for good quality, unembellished photo reference to get those costume details spot on.<br />
The launch of each new series is accompanied by such images, and we pour over them for the insight they give.<br />
<br />
Well, this month Titan Comics are launching a range of<i> New Adventures With The Tenth Doctor</i> graphic novels and the cover of issue one has a real nice image of David in costume - an image I don’t recall seeing before.<br />
<br />
What we often forget is that for every image we did get to see, there is likely a dozen shots not for public view where the actor isn’t quite looking their best, or the pose just doesn’t fit with what the publicity people want us to see at that time.<br />
<br />
The first issue has a number of alternative covers, which are all graphic based.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5y6zMHVAN6LdGOaMGdLUpnHofKiPtWBHc_8R8S20J6n8zmgrBUe00u03EiWAzmArnv6IPXEK5plgohYHvSMjELJ82EFuNlKGGaJ5rN6idEty2RB3O3QluJuGRavklh2w8WK9rQCbnGlI/s1600/10th+Dr+issue+1+alts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="95" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5y6zMHVAN6LdGOaMGdLUpnHofKiPtWBHc_8R8S20J6n8zmgrBUe00u03EiWAzmArnv6IPXEK5plgohYHvSMjELJ82EFuNlKGGaJ5rN6idEty2RB3O3QluJuGRavklh2w8WK9rQCbnGlI/s320/10th+Dr+issue+1+alts.jpg" width="255" /></a><br />
<br />
But for one of the covers it seems Titan Comics have gained access to some of these previously unseen photoshoot images. I hope we get some more gems on the coming issues.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUHHK25cTbMb5wq8DMeskInpmgiuWn070u29LRgnqKlwjyBpD1VUgGibAzao4sCYNtqb3MYHJ0EWHWmVKcKNziMe6FMCGnSbTTfq3-6DUIS0WWJSMiyV6M4YA4OnrhgqiUcWKtEeya1yk/s1600/10th+Dr+issue+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="607" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUHHK25cTbMb5wq8DMeskInpmgiuWn070u29LRgnqKlwjyBpD1VUgGibAzao4sCYNtqb3MYHJ0EWHWmVKcKNziMe6FMCGnSbTTfq3-6DUIS0WWJSMiyV6M4YA4OnrhgqiUcWKtEeya1yk/s640/10th+Dr+issue+1.jpg" width="400" /></a><br />

<br />
Aside from the glasses, this matches publicity portraits to accompany the series four two part story, <i>Silence In The Library</i>.<br />
<br />
He’s in an unusual stance - maybe a little off the wall and not entirely in the style of David’s typical poses as the Tenth Doctor.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;">FOOTNOTE</span></b><br />
No sooner has this first issue hit newsstands (and sold out) there is already an exclusive cover variant of the Tenth Doctor conjoining with the Eleventh Doctor to make a single, and very clever image.<br />
<br />

<br />
It has you wondering what David was leaning on to get this pose.<br />
<br />
Again, check out his fringe and how it matches the sample shown here.<br />

<br />
A reader has highlighted an eBay listing from a seller who trades in surplus stock.<br />
<br />

They are selling a range of Rocha John Rocha ties, among them is the tie bought by costume designer Louise Page, but which ultimately went unused.<br />
The unused tie then sold as part of a job lot at the <a href="http://tennantcoat.blogspot.co.uk/2010/02/bonhams-costume-sale-24th-february-2010.html">Bonhams 2010 <i>Doctor Who</i> auction</a>.<br />
<br />
The tie was initially selling for £9.99 - an absolute bargain!<br />

They had a few for sale, and after being told of the <i>Doctor Who</i> connection, restocked with over a dozen of the ties - at the higher price of £17.99!<br />

<br />
He spotted a pair of GAP trousers on eBay and was already speaking directly to the seller to secure them.<br />
However, they are waist 36 which is a size or two too big for my friend.<br />
Ends up he needs a waist 32 - which I have half a dozen pairs of.<br />
I’d be happier with a pair of waist 36 as these will give me just a bit more fabric once dissected to use to make an Ultimate Tennant Suit.<br />
<br />
So we agreed a straight trade - his 36s for a pair of my 32s. He’s actually ended up a bit better off as mine are mint and still with labels, where as these are pre-worn.<br />
<br />
Eitherway, we both won!<br />

<b><span style="color: #45818e;">By Alex Murphy</span></b></div>
<br />
I had a great time at Gallifrey One last week, and met up with some old friends, as well as some new ones I had made online in the last year.<br />
One is <b>Alex Murphy</b>, who I’ve been chatting to on and off for a while.<br />
<br />
He has recently started his own blog, and has written a very informative comparison between the Magnoli replica GAP fabric and the real deal.<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://thegingerdoctor.wordpress.com/"><span style="font-size: large;">The Ginger Doctor</span></a></blockquote>
It is reproduced here with kind permission.<br />
<br />
There has been much speculation in the cosplay community about where to get the best-of-the-best in terms of Tenth Doctor gear. Tennant’s Doctor is extremely popular at conventions and his iconic suits and jacket are a hot commodity.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVBvMLUyTFxNIqvv0ietuNgAlGQJ_rtotzQoxVPlIgXBwSecE_v7v1Z7k4gGUycQOLHBKtZBBVetXvjgS4noGZYij5FhS2T3mc87OSS_Suv-T8f-DyxQGzbIM5zt97_CShfITL-nt6aZI/s1600/1601239_1395460267370542_936488000_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVBvMLUyTFxNIqvv0ietuNgAlGQJ_rtotzQoxVPlIgXBwSecE_v7v1Z7k4gGUycQOLHBKtZBBVetXvjgS4noGZYij5FhS2T3mc87OSS_Suv-T8f-DyxQGzbIM5zt97_CShfITL-nt6aZI/s1600/1601239_1395460267370542_936488000_n.jpg" height="320" width="207" /></a></div>
<a href="http://www.magnoliclothiers.com/" target="_blank">Magnoli Clothiers</a> began offering a <a href="http://www.magnoliclothiers.com/tennant-cotton-fabric-p-382.html" target="_blank">custom reweave of both the brown and blue suit fabrics</a> a few years ago, which they used on their Ten suits as well as selling by the yard. But at a hefty $60 per yard, cosplayers are naturally interested to know EXACTLY what they are getting for their money. I finally bit the bullet a while ago, after observing several Magnoli suits at various conventions, and decided that even if it wasn’t totally accurate, it was a damn good replica.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLqaf9L9qhDFf3umAj3MkJp_tiafHB4hTeY6VsVF4SYr5NU6_HN8kNIkkTxdS8zgHqDEZ_u5EkC_Wp5S4iBSABGnc2twQCP9YT7qQtWj_HWNQ1TRd14u-1H6Omk96-WMUObs5ek-nZ_nU/s1600/scan0287edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLqaf9L9qhDFf3umAj3MkJp_tiafHB4hTeY6VsVF4SYr5NU6_HN8kNIkkTxdS8zgHqDEZ_u5EkC_Wp5S4iBSABGnc2twQCP9YT7qQtWj_HWNQ1TRd14u-1H6Omk96-WMUObs5ek-nZ_nU/s1600/scan0287edit.jpg" /></a></div>
So after taking a huge financial leap and having a custom tailored suit from Magnoli’s brown suit fabric, I had a stroke of good fortune – someone sold me scraps of an old pair of GAP trousers!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Putting the two on top of each other, I hope I can give everyone who’s invested in the Magnoli fabric a huge sigh of relief!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_LQZksUQ7jVRTR-Sdj1SuIEBCOAxdHVJ-ELVCNJOC8fijQWb9lrNubys728HPxwinx0D90zdeIY9hVI8u2QqAdJ_8lMumeVk-DEtvAWd9MyqVJy23OoyFyJRkzpxQFvcBqvWW4l1z_XA/s1600/dscn1364label1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_LQZksUQ7jVRTR-Sdj1SuIEBCOAxdHVJ-ELVCNJOC8fijQWb9lrNubys728HPxwinx0D90zdeIY9hVI8u2QqAdJ_8lMumeVk-DEtvAWd9MyqVJy23OoyFyJRkzpxQFvcBqvWW4l1z_XA/s1600/dscn1364label1.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
While not 100% perfect, Magnoli’s current reweave is EASILY the best available option. The stripe spacing is the biggest problem, being too wide (1/2″) between stripes (the GAP fabric is approx. 1/16″ narrower between stripes). As you can see above, the blue on the stripes is nearly perfect in color, and although the Magnoli choice in browns appear too dark, this is a nearly brand new swatch, and many of the Magnoli suits I saw at Gallifrey One this year had faded to exactly the shade of the GAP trousers after some wear. Minorly, you can see that the stripes are SLIGHTLY too wide themselves, although woven correctly.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnmVteb0mCTi9zl_frV42BW1F6mGSxoNGAUOjAAG7SeTLbGQlDBZm4u6H78vm0jVqtrOQvoK1W1FdGq-8TngCPpqKaJy9x7zEI9jGXb5gH3h4MqGVQ4B5iLRiVma7MOWvcbfhtSG8gvQ4/s1600/img_1791.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnmVteb0mCTi9zl_frV42BW1F6mGSxoNGAUOjAAG7SeTLbGQlDBZm4u6H78vm0jVqtrOQvoK1W1FdGq-8TngCPpqKaJy9x7zEI9jGXb5gH3h4MqGVQ4B5iLRiVma7MOWvcbfhtSG8gvQ4/s1600/img_1791.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a>Feeling the two in my hands, the Magnoli fabric is ever-so-slightly thicker, which I think is merely a slightly thicker yarn used in the weave, which would account for the scale problems. Magnoli’s cotton is still a wonderfully lightweight choice.<br />
<br />
But the above picture isn’t all I have to offer!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggI3AZTklWz1-jE0gDEIfc2G9xpcMNdfkY4RqwfRYy8f32Qso4C1c_meLBp2IK6H7dUVQhdEq3gUl3GhjLM34RMkZURJ_wBVrkuwrV5XfFKow_U_CIHPiY1JJUiWfzBOx19ZarvaRsZKY/s1600/img_1796.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggI3AZTklWz1-jE0gDEIfc2G9xpcMNdfkY4RqwfRYy8f32Qso4C1c_meLBp2IK6H7dUVQhdEq3gUl3GhjLM34RMkZURJ_wBVrkuwrV5XfFKow_U_CIHPiY1JJUiWfzBOx19ZarvaRsZKY/s1600/img_1796.jpg" height="320" width="239" /></a>I met a fellow Ten cosplayer at Gallifrey One, introduced by some mutual friends. You may know him from Steve Ricks’ blog, as he is the one and only Kevin Coppa!<br />
<br />
Kevin is an absolutely wonderful person, and was gracious enough to oblige me in wearing his GAP suit next to my Magnoli suit for a true side-by-side comparison!<br />
<br />
He was even nice enough to let me wear his suit jacket!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3fyb17P5O9QfmWljrc7vfajHGt-dLcmVe8tLTxG9nL2wMATE7DkD0j5dsklc3F2WpQAot6F5gLI7C5cH9ELXEuWDNwLeW0lvM2YMHxbi2pRq6WXmFrpYcUCm8Q9rVbRSwDauVVQ011fk/s1600/img_1801.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3fyb17P5O9QfmWljrc7vfajHGt-dLcmVe8tLTxG9nL2wMATE7DkD0j5dsklc3F2WpQAot6F5gLI7C5cH9ELXEuWDNwLeW0lvM2YMHxbi2pRq6WXmFrpYcUCm8Q9rVbRSwDauVVQ011fk/s1600/img_1801.jpg" height="400" width="298" /></a></div>
As you can see, you’ve really got to put the two next to each other to even notice that they aren’t the same fabric.<br />
<br />
Hopefully this can help to ease the minds of all who have shelled out the money for the Magnoli fabric – it’s WELL worth the investment! Hopefully they can even revise the stripe spacing so that a Magnoli jacket can be worn COMPLETELY seamlessly with a pair of GAP trousers! But even so, it’s an excellent investment to make, if you were on the fence about where to throw your money.<br />
<br />
Alex also has a great blog where he makes Doctor Who inspired cocktails!<br />
Well worth a look.<br />

But to get it I used some tactics that aren’t my usual style.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1wbGii40Gj-CsFS6ENRpljSyU9TIgMkqtUCJeVmABUc2xeFBc-a-5Ya8953IAdtqCpG9nGuhmcqFvgNW8x3W-oEC903Xb9k6EeykCYt2jC3H7lDYkzWNIBeNBwLtm5VumN3bnIuFCGCk/s1600/Armani+tie+LISTING.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="177" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1wbGii40Gj-CsFS6ENRpljSyU9TIgMkqtUCJeVmABUc2xeFBc-a-5Ya8953IAdtqCpG9nGuhmcqFvgNW8x3W-oEC903Xb9k6EeykCYt2jC3H7lDYkzWNIBeNBwLtm5VumN3bnIuFCGCk/s1600/Armani+tie+LISTING.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

This gorgeous White Label Giorgio Armani tie is 100% silk and made in Italy. The background is a subtle two-tone weave of chocolate brown and sky blue, featuring chocolate brown ovals with sky blue squares offset inside them. The two-tone weave allows the background to catch the light differently based on which way it is turned, making it appear either dusty blue or dark brown. It is lined with a chartreuse woven lining with the words GIORGIO ARMANI patterned throughout.<br />
<br />
After <i>Doctor Who</i> costume designer Louise Page purchased several of these ties, it became one of the most popular and iconic of David Tennant's ties during his run as the Tenth Doctor. It was first seen in the episode <i>Love and Monsters</i> and was later featured in <i>Army of Ghosts, Doomsday, Smith and Jones, The Shakespeare Code, Gridlock, Fires of Pompeii, The Family of Blood, Turn Left, The Stolen Earth, Journey’s End</i>, and <i>Planet of the Dead</i>.<br />
<br />
This tie is in MINT CONDITION! It has no flaws, snags, rips, burns, stains, or fraying. It is 57" long and is 3⅝" wide at the widest point. It has had extremely good care taken of it in non-smoking home.<br />
<br />

It may be a very long time before another one appears. If you were looking for a special detail to bring that unique authenticity to your Tenth Doctor cosplay, this is it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">SECURING THE TIE</span></b><br />
The tie has been listed by a friend of mine who amazingly has tracked down two such ties in as many months.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2q0XJXjF5sZ6aFuF3MfOn9D35Pzm9V6VVF-Rcwnqj26Z6FhMBtd09Z-5UyyxYS1WzFMo-vnU5aPQYQYDJFvKTs9DQVtPwFvfOhnBQpewWFczcmckUT0whcPn5J1EuzpKd9K_c2ULHgtA/s1600/Armani+tie+INSETS+A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2q0XJXjF5sZ6aFuF3MfOn9D35Pzm9V6VVF-Rcwnqj26Z6FhMBtd09Z-5UyyxYS1WzFMo-vnU5aPQYQYDJFvKTs9DQVtPwFvfOhnBQpewWFczcmckUT0whcPn5J1EuzpKd9K_c2ULHgtA/s1600/Armani+tie+INSETS+A.jpg" width="170" /></a>He then planned to sell the spare to get some pocket money for Gallifrey One next month.<br />
<br />
I know the seller is a collector of the Tennant ties, so I offered him a unique swap for one of my screen accurate replica Eleventh Hour Christian Lacroix ties.<br />
<br />
He wasn’t too sure, but when I told him the full story behind how I made the tie he was convinced and we had a deal!<br />
<br />
He closed the eBay listing and when I get to Gallifrey One we’ll do the exchange.<br />
Suffice to say he’s very excited to get his hands on one of my ties - and I’ve added another tie to my collection.Steven Ricks Tailoringhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07549983020683092455noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5070344278942504639.post-27217348696591210712014-01-11T19:40:00.000+00:002014-02-02T19:40:23.941+00:00The murder of St George<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

In June last year I highlighted that <a href="http://tennantsuit.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/the-duffer-youre-fired.html">Dara O’Briain was was seen sporting Tennant’s 50th Anniversary St George by Duffer tie</a> during an edition of <i>The Apprentice - You’re Fired</i>!<br />

Well one of my readers has spied the same tie in this week’s edition of <i>Midsomer Murders</i>.<br />
Titled <i>Let Us Prey</i>, the episode was first screened on 8th January 2014.<br />
<br />

It is worn by lead star Neil Dudgeon as Detective Chief Inspector John Barnaby.<br />
He puts the tie on around mid-episode and wears it pretty much to the end of the investigation.<br />
<br />
As an aside the episode stars Michael Jayston, who played the Valeyard during the <i>Trial Of A Time Lord</i> season in 1986.<br />

They are size 32 x 32, mint, still tagged and unworn.<br />
<br />
If you are a SERIOUS buyer, do get in touch and make me an offer!<br />
<br />
I do have a figure in my mind, below which I cannot possibly sell them for - but it’s always worth getting in touch.<br />
